How to Use Chips in a Meeting

In a city or town with a small number of SCA meetings, you may decide to have at least one of those meetings to be a "chip" meeting.  In many chip meetings, chips are given out sometime during the break where SCA announcements are made.  The person who has been elected as the trusted servant for giving out chips may lead this time by saying:

"This meeting is also a chip meeting.  We use chips to celebrate periods of continuous sexual sobriety.    We would like to celebrate those periods with you.  Is there anyone who has one to three months of sobriety?  (If someone raises their hand, the "chip person" would ask them for which period they are celebrating and then go over to them, give them the appropriate chip and also a hug).  Four to six months?  Up to a year?  Periods greater than a year?  Is anyone counting days? (there are usually no chips given for counting days, but the group will applaud to acknowledge the person).   Finally, we also offer the white chip, or the Surrender Chip,  to anyone who is willing to surrender themselves to a new way of life."

Some Resources to Obtain Chips

The first place to check in your city is a 12 Step Store.  Many times these stores will have different types of chips for different kinds of fellowship.  Ask for chips that are "generic", that is, chips that do not designate any particular fellowship.  Usually, these chips will have the Serenity Prayer on the back of the chip.  They may be a "poker" chip, which is usually made of clay, a plastic chip, or a metal chip.

Here are a couple of other places to check.  Again SCA does not officially endorse any of these businesses.  They are provided to you only to help you start the process of locating chips for your meetings.

  • Marion & Co., Inc.   (800) 232-2447  (information provided by the NY Intergroup).

Chips must be ordered in quantities of 100 (1 box), but they may be
    split into groupings of 25 (e.g. 75 30-days and 25 2-years).

Payment must be made with a credit card.

The Washington DC group also purchases chips from this company.  They only use chips that include the "surrender" chip and chips from 1 month through 9 months.   This group differs from NY in that it has additional chips for 7, 8, and 9 months.   They supplement these chips with metal chips that they purchase in a local 12 Step Store for any period greater than or equal to one year.
